Jenny Zhang will lead us in crafting traditional Chinese paper cuttings. Chinese paper-cutting, known as jianzhi, is one of the oldest folk-arts from China and is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It dates back to the 2nd century CE, when paper was invented. The art involves cutting patterns into paper using scissors or small blades. Usually, the artworks are made of red paper, as red is associated with festivities and luck in Chinese culture, but other colours are also used. Cut-paper artwork is used on festivals such as Chinese New Year, weddings and childbirth, as cut-paper artwork is considered to symbolize luck and happiness.
We will pair the craft activity with a Chinese tea tasting, KC will serve you tea and share a bit about it.
Jenny Zhang is Chinese-American, and has lived and studied in China, where she developed a deep appreciation for the culture and artistic traditions. She especially enjoys sharing hands-on crafts like Chinese paper cutting and helping others learn Chinese and connect with the rich history.
