Set in 1920s Appalachia, the opera tells the tale of a beautiful young woman who is betrayed and shamed by the members of her tight-knit religious community. The contemporary, yet orchestral score intertwines Appalachian fiddle tunes with refrains from Protestant revivals and expresses the longing and anguish Susannah feels.
