The Celebrated Elizabeth Smith

On Wednesday, April 12, 2023 the Wayne Public Library’s Lunchbox Learning program will feature a program by Dr. Lucia McMahon entitled “The Celebrated Elizabeth Smith”. Doors open at 12:00 pm and the program begins at 12:30 pm. The library is located at 461 Valley Road Wayne, NJ 07470. This program is free and open to the public. The Wayne Public Library is a barrier free building. Dr. Lucia McMahon will discuss the people, places, and practices that were central to women’s lives in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Her recently published book, The Celebrated Elizabeth Smith: Crafting Genius and Transatlantic Fame in the Romantic Era” explores the life and legacy of Elizabeth Smith, a learned British woman born in the momentous year 1776. Smith was an accomplished scholar in astronomy, botany, history, poetry, and language studies. She was also a curious rambler who delighted in exploring historic ruins, natural landscapes, and mountainous terrains across England, Wales, and Ireland. After her death, Elizabeth Smith gained transnational fame and was widely celebrated in conduct literature, travel narratives, tribute poetry, and biographical sketches. Together, the telling of Elizabeth Smith’s life story and the retracing of her literary afterlife reveal a larger narrative about women’s efforts to enact learned and fulfilling lives, and the cultural reactions such aspirations inspired. This will be a hybrid program. To come in-person, please register on the Wayne Public Library calendar by clicking on the date and title of the program, www.waynepubliclibrary.org. There is no need to register if you want to watch over Zoom, the Link is located on the Wayne Public Library Calendar under the program description.
