Dedication of the Edelson Gallery
Eden Woolley House, 703 Deal Road, Ocean, NJ 07712
Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 1:00 pm
Her creativity, vision, and leadership are evident in just about all the Museum does. They were responsible for the creation of the Museum itself.
Marge Edelson (October 16, 1936—January 13, 2024) cofounded the Township of Ocean Historical Museum forty years ago (1984) and helped secure its first home in two rooms of the old Oakhurst Schoolhouse (today’s school board offices). She brought to that achievement an already impressive resume. In the early 1970s, at the request of then mayor Joe Palaia, Marge had cofounded the Township of Ocean Historical Society and had coauthored the definitive book on our local history, An Historic Perspective on the Township of Ocean (1974).
Her influence is everywhere. The Spring Tea, the Doll Tea, nearly four decades of handmade quilts, handcrafted gifts for the Museum shop, original stories and illustrations that enrich our programs and exhibits, commemorative luncheons and dinners that raised thousands of dollars, a second book on our history, Images of the Township of Ocean—efforts all conceived, launched, and for years lead by Marge Edelson. She was recognized throughout the county as a champion of local history and gifted educator. She’s been honored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Township. In 2022, she and Paul (Marge’s husband and our president) received the Jane Clayton Award for their contributions to preserving and promoting Monmouth County history.
Marge will be remembered at a reception at the Museum, 1 p.m., Sunday, June 9 to rename the “Our Town Gallery” of the Eden Woolley House “The Edelson Gallery.” Please join us in honoring a woman to whom our community owes so much.
