She determinedly set about learning about alternative birthing traditions and the Black women behind them due to a less than positive experience as a Black women giving birth in the 1970's. This information is vital, especially at a time when the midwives’ knowledge and holistic approaches are essential counterbalances to a medical system that routinely fails Black mothers and babies.
