Zines have long been a powerful tool for self-expression, activism, and amplifying voices that might not otherwise be heard. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the history and impact of zines, their role in social justice movements, and why they remain a vital form of independent publishing today. We’ll start with a brief introduction to the art of zine-making, including how these self-published booklets have been used to challenge the status quo, build community, and create change. You'll learn a simple folding technique to transform a single sheet of paper into a mini-zine and have the option to use pre-made templates as a starting point. From there, the space is yours to create. Using collage, drawing, writing, and any medium that speaks to you, you’ll craft your own zine centered around themes of social justice. Some supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own materials to make their zines truly personal. Sharing supplies is welcome and encouraged to foster a collaborative, community-driven experience. If you’re comfortable, we’ll also have the opportunity to photocopy and replicate your work in true zine fashion, ensuring that your message can be shared beyond the workshop. No prior experience is necessary—just a passion for self-expression and a desire to explore the power of independent media. Come ready to create, share, and connect!
