Tea Time Talks Bring History to the Kingston Area Community
The first will feature reminiscences of George Allen, Kingston’s first Locktender. The early 1800s in America were far from a golden age. Allen’s life was full of hardship until he was hired in 1834 to operate the Lock and Swing Bridge at Kingston on the newly opened Delaware and Raritan Canal. His autobiography is both surprising and dramatic. The afternoon will include two other short presentations, followed by tea and questions in the Methodist Church social hall. The event is free and all are welcome. Parking is available along Church Street (left side, by cemetery wall) and in the Methodist Church parking lot, with handicap parking and entrance ramp. The goal of our winter Tea Time Talks is to spread awareness of Kingston’s 300-plus years of recorded history through stories and research. Since 2024 the Kingston Historical Society (KHS) group of volunteer archivists has worked to rediscover the history of the village. Last year’s talks included information on the village’s bottling companies, area land preservation, and the first written description of travel from New Brunswick to Trenton.
