‘Remembering Dietrich Bonhoeffer’

Greenville Community Church will hold a program, “Remembering Dietrich Bonhoeffer: A Force for Good” Sunday, April 16, from 2 to 3 p.m. commemorating Bonhoeffer’s life and legacy. It focuses on the German pastor and peace activist Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who died in a concentration camp in 1945 for his resistance against the Nazi regime. Almost 15 years before that, Bonhoeffer befriended a former congregant of Greenville Church during a visit to the United States and spent many hours walking in the woods where Edgemont High School is now located. “This event was supposed to happen in April 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Bonhoeffer’s death,” said the Rev. Samuel Clover, senior minister of Greenville Church. “Unfortunately, COVID prevented that. But now that things are opening, and with the frightening rise of anti-Semitism over the last few years, we feel strongly that now is the time to finish what was begun. We hope this program will help us ask ourselves what it means to love, and what we might be called to do to stand up for justice.” Three major speakers will be featured: Dr. Gary Dorrien, Reinhold Niebuhr professor of social ethics at Union Theological Seminary, NYC; Dr. Mary Ellen Schmider, professor of history, University of Maryland and former executive director of the Fulbright Association; and Dr. Reggie L. Williams, professor of Christian ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary and author of “Bonhoeffer’s Black Jesus: Harlem Renaissance Theology and an Ethic of Resistance.” The program will be introduced by David Gill, consul general of the German Consulate in New York.
