Centennial Ball
The Metropolitan Vintage Dance & Social Club invites the public to celebrate America’s birthday at the Centennial Ball on Saturday, August 1, from 8 to 11 p.m. in the historic Morristown Masonic Lodge, 39 Maple Avenue, Morristown, NJ. A workshop in historical dances will be held at the lodge from 2 to 4 that day. Tickets are $50 per person in advance/$55 at the door ($25 advance/$30 at door with student ID). The event is modeled after the exuberant celebrations of America’s 1876 Centennial. Light refreshments will be served. The dress code is a nod to our country's first 100 years of history – formal or military dress from the colonial to bustle eras or modern formal or cocktail attire.
Spare Parts will provide period music. For over 25 years Liz Stell and Bill Matthiesen have been researching, recording, and performing all types of dance music. They've played for concerts, contradances, and Victorian and other period events in more than 20 states and provinces. They've also produced six recordings of dance music.
At the workshop, novices will learn the basics of period dances. It will be led by instructor Martha Griffin. She is a dancer, choreographer, performer, and dance teacher who has been involved in vintage dance for more than 35 years. She takes great pleasure in welcoming newcomers and introducing them to the joys of “old-time dancing.” The workshop is included in the ticket price.
A portion of the proceeds benefit Partners in Charity. Partners in Charity, a 501(c)(3) organization, supports local charities, food banks, shelters, children’s programs, medical ministries, and individuals in need by rescuing, reusing, and redistributing surplus food, water, clothing, medical equipment, and furniture to those charities and individuals.
The Metropolitan Vintage Dance & Social Club is a private organization dedicated to keeping alive the social customs, dances, and other pastimes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The MVD&SC formerly sponsored the annual Armistice Ball in Morristown. Members dance and do living history demonstrations in the styles of the 1820s through 1940s at events throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Its members are primarily from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York.
