Dr. Narayan will talk about the use of the new Vera Rubin Observatory in the Atacama Desert of Chile to understand the nature of dark matter and dark energy in our universe. The visible universe contains only about 5% of the total mass and energy of the cosmos. The new observatory will image the entire sky visible from Chile every four nights. The images will help to infer the locations of concentrations of dark matter and to measure the repelling effects of dark energy. Co-sponsored by St. Louis Astronomical Society and the NASA MO Space Grant Consortium at Washington U. Wilson Hall, Room 214, is accessible from Forsyth Blvd. via Tolman Way. It is just behind (north) of Somers Family Hall. Free parking in yellow zones and in University garages.. Also available via Zoom. E-mail [email protected] to receive the Zoom link.
