A waking nightmare like none other, Dario Argento’s Suspiria sits as comfortably in a grindhouse as it does in an arthouse. The Italian master’s breakout dance macabre finds American Suzy (Jessica Harper) enrolling in a German ballet school that could be seen as seventh circle of hell if it wasn’t also so stylishly decorated. Although Argento and crew shower us with a rain of maggots and throw us into razor wire pits, Suspiria is nevertheless one of the most visually enthralling works of its medium, seemingly inventing colors never seen before. That coupled with Goblin’s classic score means missing it with our new sight and sound would be a ghastly tragedy.
