Heavy Traffic, animation iconoclast Ralph Bakshi's highly personal, satirical 1973 sophomore feature follow-up to the landmark Fritz the Cat, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Using the story of struggling cartoonist Michael Corleone as an anchor, Bakshi draws upon his experiences growing up in New York’s ghettos to conjure a surreal, abrasive caricature of urban life through a series of vignettes ranging from the darkly humorous to quietly tragic. Poetically paced, combining avant-garde layouts and integration of live-action footage with animation from a blend of Golden Age veterans and eager young talent, there’s a reason Heavy Traffic is often regarded as the prolific director’s masterpiece.
