Set on the remote Sable Island off mainland Nova Scotia, Geographies of Solitude follows a lone environmental scientist, Zoe Lucas, as she studies the rich ecosystem and wildlife on the island. Directed and shot by Jacquelyn Mills on 16mm, Mills’ camera intimately follows Lucas as she goes on near-ritualistic daily tasks on the island while musing about her discoveries. Blending observational nature documentary with experimental images made from eco-friendly filmmaking techniques, Geographies of Solitude transforms the unique beauty of Sable Island into a haunting dreamscape of nature you’ve always known yet never been.
