Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival just weeks after The Unbelievable Truth began its run in American cinemas, his sophomore feature, Trust, once again teams writer/director/producer Hal Hartley with star Adrienne Shelly, here playing pregnant high school dropout Maria. Rejected by nearly everyone (her father most especially, so shocked by news of her pregnancy that he dies of a heart attack), Maria falls into the orbit of the older Matthew (Martin Donovan, last on our screen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice), a genius with electronics, less so with people, and who still lives with his overbearing father. Films as varied as Modern Times and Lost in Translation might come to the viewer’s mind while watching, and between this and The Unbelievable Truth you see Hartley beating down a path later followed by indie filmmakers such as Whit Stillman, Wes Anderson, and Noah Baumbach.
It is $8 for the general public; $7 for seniors, Webster alumni and students from other schools; $6 for Webster University staff and faculty; $0 for Webster students with proper ID
