An exploration of memory, impermanence, and, inevitably, archiving and the quest to hold onto the ephemeral, Ian Cheney’s new documentary The Arc of Oblivion takes us from Cheney’s homemade ark in Maine to salt mines in the Alps, a seed repository in Svalbard, and an ancient library in the Sahara, among other places. Taking some filmmaking cues from Werner Herzog, who here both executive produces and briefly appears in the film, Cheney also makes use of his friend Kirsten Johnson, the beloved documentarian behind Cameraperson and Dick Johnson is Dead.
