Secret Sunshine

Mourning the recent loss of her husband, young widow Shin-ae (Jeon Do-yeon) moves herself and her son from bustling Seoul to Miryang, the small hometown her husband hailed from. Struggling to fit in, Shin-ae tries different approaches to her new life, all the while local try-hard Jong-chan (Song Kang-ho, who we just saw in Memories of Murder last week) tries to get in her good graces. With Secret Sunshine, which won Jeon the best actress prize at Cannes, Lee shows his adeptness at plotting screenplays as robustly as one would expect of a deeply involving novel. Indeed, Lee’s background is in writing, which he did before and during his celebrated filmmaking career—just earlier this year he had a short story published in The New Yorker. In Korean with English subtitles. Unless otherwise noted, admission is: $8 for the general public$7 for seniors, Webster alumni and students from other schools$6 for Webster University staff and facultyFree for Webster students with proper ID.
