(Jess Franco, 1970, West Germany/Spain, 97 minutes)
Arriving during Franco's time with Producer Harry Alan Towers, which resulted in some of the biggest budgets of his career, but also often a loss of complete creative control. Touted in the press as "the most faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel to date," Count Dracula quickly found itself a troubled production, with the majority of its budget going towards Christopher Lee & Klaus Kinski's paychecks. Though undoubtedly flawed, when looking back at the film through the lens of Franco's career at large, there's much to love in this periodically stunning gothic chiller also featuring an early Soledad Miranda appearance, alongside Franco stalwarts such as Maria Rohm, Jack Taylor, & Paul Muller. Considering the production woes Franco experienced ultimately led to his inspiration to create Vampyros Lesbos, Macumba Sexual, and beyond; there's more than enough to enjoy here for fans of the endless well of Bram Stoker adaptations. Not to mention this brand new 4K restoration from Severin Films which finally allows the film to be seen as originally intended.
