Garnering not only a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination but also a Best Director nomination for Hiroshi Teshigahara, the first time a Japanese director had made it into that category, Woman in the Dunes was a true sensation upon release. Adapted from Kōbō Abe’s also great novel of two years prior, Woman in the Dunes stars Eiji Okada (Hiroshima mon amour, Lady Snowblood) as an entomologist who ventures to a remote desert to study a rare beetle and, when he misses the bus back to Tokyo, finds himself taking shelter with a young widow who lives in a hut in the bottom of the sand dunes, who is constantly struggling to clear the sands that are always on the brink of engulfing her home.
