Following a 1955 petition from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the U.S. Congress adopted a resolution to set aside Sept. 17-23 to observe Constitution Week. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the resolution into law on Aug. 2, 1956. In recognition of the milestone document that established the United States government in September 1787,
Constitution Committee members from the DAR Webster Groves chapter will set up displays in community libraries, churches, schools, and banks. On Sept. 17, bells will ring in classrooms across the country.to commemorate the signing of the Constitution. Constitution Week activities are designed to inform people about the importance of the Constitution, emphasize citizens' responsibilities to protect and defend it, and to encourage the study of historical events that led to the framing of the landmark document creating the foundation of a free nation.
Chapter Regent Carol Hofer commented, "Those who wrote the Constitution believed no government can create freedom, but government must guard freedom rather than encroach up the freedoms of its people. The Constitution by itself cannot guarantee liberty"
Constitution Week events provide a perfect opportunity for adults and children to read and study the document designed to safeguard American liberty, the U.S. Constitution.
