Mother's Day: The Gratitude Concert

This latest edition extends a special thank-you to our mothers for their hard work, generosity and love. Our contemporary Pop, Soul, Gospel, Folk, and Rock music will send a message that is raucous, grateful, bold, and hopeful. This event is free, but reservations are recommended: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/6277569 For the first time in the organization’s history, the Mother’s Day concert features spoken word performers in addition to music. St. Louis-based author Fatima Elkabti, will read an excerpt from her new book, “The White Parasol,” based on her great-grandfather, Saeed Zineddine, a prominent lawyer and poet in Yafa, where Palestinians faced mass displacement during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. St. Louis-based rabbi, musician and poet James Stone Goodman will read from his books of poetry, “Fountain, Respect for Sources” and “Espaclaria: is a mirror, sometimes cloudy, sometimes clear.” Katie McGrath, the founder and executive director of Immigrant Song, said this concert continues their tradition of inviting St. Louis singers and musicians to be inspired by their ancestors who arrived in the US driven by force or fear. “Some arrived in chains on slave ships,” McGrath said. “Some, like my Irish grandmother, fled hunger and poverty. However we got here, we’re all here now. We belong here, and we belong to each other.” All Immigrant Song concerts provide a musical response to the spike in race- and religion-based domestic hate crimes since 2016 in St. Louis and across the nation that continues to this day. Other singers and musicians include Robert Breig, Phoebe Elliot, Chuck Flowers, Anu French, Mike Krysl, Brian McCary, Elizabeth Murphy-White, Angela Nicholson, Walter Parks, Tonee Roper, John Wallach and Chet Whye, Jr. Larry D. Pry is the music director. McGrath is the director and producer. Contact: Katie McGrath, 314-971-0553, [email protected].
