The Post-Dispatch Weatherbird at the Sunset Hills Historical Society

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Weatherbird and Dan Martin To Present at the Sunset Hills Historical Society Sunset Hills, MO - May 2, 2024 --- Author, artist, historian, journalist, and amateur bird-watcher, Dan Martin, cartoonist of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Weatherbird that appears daily in the newspaper, will be the guest speaker at the Sunset Hills Historical Society on Monday, May 20 at 7 PM at the Sunset Hills Community Center. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Weatherbird has been at the forefront of history with a bird’s eye view since 1901 and is the oldest continually drawn cartoon in American journalism. One Hundred and twenty-three years of watching the front-page news stories the Weatherbird has been created by only six men, three of them named Martin. Martin says, “Being the Bird-keeper since 1986, I’ve drawn the Weatherbird commenting on countless historic and non-historic happenings, but the old Bird himself has opined on just about every major event for 123 years, and he’s still going strong.” Dan Martin will be presenting not only a history of the Weatherbird, but with his vast knowledge of local history, will speak to the important role of Sunset Hills in the history of St. Louis newspaper cartooning. To bastardize a phrase attributed to the Washington Post “journalism is the first rough draft of history.” It is well-known that our own Weatherbird has seen it all. Martin is also the author of “See you in the Funny Papers-The Rich Tradition of St. Louis Cartooning” and “The First 100 Years of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Weatherbird”. If you are lucky enough to own a book, he will be available for book-signing after the presentation. This program of the Sunset Hills Historical Society will be at the Sunset Hills Community Center located at 3915 South Lindbergh Blvd.; St. Louis, MO 63127, on the complex with the Sunset Hills City Hall. Watch for future presentations; the next will be Monday, August 19, 2024.
