Lights Out for Nature: Protecting Our Night Skies
Artificial light has transformed our modern world, making cities safer, extending productive hours, and illuminating our homes and communities. However, the rapid growth of outdoor lighting has also created an unintended consequence—light pollution. This program, “Lights Out for Nature,” explores how excessive artificial light at night affects the natural world, our health, and our ability to experience the beauty of a truly dark sky.
During this engaging Dark Sky presentation, participants will learn about the different forms of light pollution, including skyglow, glare, light trespass, and clutter. These types of lighting can wash out the stars, waste energy, and disrupt natural ecosystems. What was once a nightly view of thousands of stars is now, for many people, reduced to just a handful of the brightest ones. Understanding the sources and impacts of light pollution is the first step toward protecting our nighttime environment.
