Ecological Gardening 101

Ecological gardening bridges the gap between people and nature and allows us to play a role in local ecological conservation efforts. Become an ecological gardener and transform your yard into a healthy, productive ecosystem that supports biodiversity. This presentation will discuss tips and tricks for creating a garden that benefits pollinators and other wildlife while maintaining an aesthetic appearance. We will discuss intentional design techniques and strategic maintenance tips, such as how to "leave the leaves," as well as recommendations for seasonal cleanup routines. The presenter for this program is Vivian Bouse: Vivian is a horticulturist at Shaw Nature Reserve. She maintains gardens in the Whitmire Wildflower Garden, a native plant display garden that provides the public with an opportunity to learn about native landscaping and nature. Vivian has a degree in Wildlife and Natural Resources Conservation Biology and previously worked in ecological restoration. She gardens with an ecological conservation perspective to help bridge the gap between people and nature. Outside of work, she spends much of her free time hiking, camping, and going on canoe trips to explore the Ozarks and all of Missouri's natural areas. This class is in partnership with Wild Ones St Charles Area Chapter, a nonprofit organization designed to promote the understanding of native plants, their benefits, and what they can provide for the environment both in private as well as public areas of landscaping.
