Civil War Round Table of St. Charles
The Civil War Round Table of St. Charles meets the second Tuesday at of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Kathryn Linnemann Library in St. Charles. Our February 6 topic is The Confederate Navy. In February, we will leave Terra Firma for a fascinating look at the Confederate Navy. Lacking the strong seafaring tradition and maritime facilities of the North, the Confederacy was forced to improvise a Navy. Confederate leaders used captured Northern vessels and purchased European ships to establish their fledgling Navy. Additionally, the Confederacy upgraded the Southern maritime infrastructure to create Naval innovations such as the first ironclad ocean-going warship and the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel.
