Dan Alva: "Something Out of Nothing"
Square One is proud to present "Something Out of Nothing", a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Dan Alva. Raised in Miami, Alva credits his artistic foundation to his time spent in the family garage, working alongside his father. His work reimagines the classics, blending the traditional oil painting techniques of the Old Masters with modern patterns, creating a striking juxtaposition that captures the viewer’s attention. Despite having no formal training, "Something Out of Nothing" exemplifies the power of experimentation and creativity, encouraging audiences to take risks and explore new possibilities.
Dan Alva (born in 1984) comes from a Spanish background of fine artists. Based in Miami, Alva takes the classics and reinvents them for a modern-day audience. He re-masters the masters and creates undoubtedly alluring work. His bold and unapologetic pieces are incredibly intricate, as he combines his figurative visual language with bursts of camouflage, stripes, and other patterns. Alva has worked as a creative in Advertising for the last 15 years and has work in the MoMA's permanent film collection. Today a successful creative director in the advertising industry, his designer’s eye for shape, form and colour is matched by a prodigious talent for painting. Alva approaches his paintings in the same way as an ad campaign, experimenting with different concepts, sketching, creating mock-ups, researching artists’ histories and thinking about how the works will be photographed, all before picking up a paintbrush. Using meticulously applied oil paint and the same methods as the masters he is remastering, he honors their individual styles while creating unexpected collaborations between artists that make the viewer question Alva’s source material, and what it has become.
