From the city’s founding through the Civil War, many free Blacks lived in St. Louis, and some were quite wealthy. But even with money had limited power and influence, so they were never wholly “free,” their Black skin carrying the presumption of enslavement. Join cultural preservationist Angela da Silva as she explains the history of St. Louis’s Black aristocracy and the challenges they faced, despite their wealth and independence.
African American History Initiative (AAHI) programming is presented by Wells Fargo.
