30th Annual Youth Symposium & Operation BigBookBag

The Central Region of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., in partnership with several regional chapters and community organizations, proudly presents the 30th Annual Operation BigBookBag & Youth Symposium on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Mason-Clark Middle School in East St. Louis, Illinois. This annual youth empowerment event is designed to inspire and equip middle and high school students throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area with the tools they need to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. The event is free and open to youth in the community, and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Operation BigBookBag and the Youth Symposium are two hallmark initiatives of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., founded by the visionary 19th International Grand Basileus, Dr. LaRona J. Morris. First launched on March 9, 1996, at Cahokia High School in Illinois, these programs were created to encourage academic excellence, leadership development, and community engagement among young people. Dr. Morris, a respected educator and principal in the Cahokia and East St. Louis school districts, often described adolescence as “the risky business of growing up.” Her dedication to guiding and empowering youth led to the creation of these impactful programs that continue to serve communities nationwide. Operation BigBookBag is a national service initiative focused on providing essential school supplies and educational tools to students in underserved communities. This initiative helps ensure that every child has the resources needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond. The Youth Symposium provides an interactive and engaging forum where students can explore important topics such as self-esteem, mental wellness, leadership, academic achievement, and career readiness. Through workshops, mentorship, and interactive sessions, students are encouraged to develop confidence, build leadership skills, and make positive life choices. This year’s symposium theme, “Future Forward: Elevating Youth Through STEM and Life Skills,” focuses on preparing students for the future by introducing them to opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while also developing essential life skills needed for long-term success. Participants will experience a full day of engaging programming designed to educate, motivate, and empower youth.
