Ferguson: 10 Years Later
2024 is the 10th anniversary of the death of Michael Brown and subsequent civil unrest in Ferguson. The Kirkwood Human Rights Commission will host a panel discussion, "Ferguson: 10 Years Later," on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the Kirkwood Performing Arts Center featuring former Ferguson Commissioners who will discuss the implementation of the recommendations of their 2015 "Forward through Ferguson Report". The event will run from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, with doors opening at 6:30 PM.
The Ferguson Commission was established by Governor Jay Nixon and its 2015 Report contained numerous proposals for racial equity in the criminal justice system, education, jobs and housing. This thought-provoking discussion will feature key figures from the Ferguson Commission and community leaders, moderated by esteemed journalist Alvin Reid. Panelists will explore the impact of the "Forward Through Ferguson" report, examining which recommendations were adopted, which were not, and the reasons behind these outcomes.
Confirmed panelists include Commission Co-Chair Rich McClure, Alderman Rasheen Aldridge, Jr., Former SLMPD Chief Dr. Daniel Isom, and Sgt. Kevin Ahlbrand, with additional panelists to be announced.
The event aims to reflect on the progress made since 2014, address ongoing challenges, and discuss the path forward for our community. Before and after the event, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local social justice organizations and learn about ongoing efforts for equality and justice in our region.
