Join us for a traditional Swedish Christmas celebration. The Swedish Kaffestuga (coffeehouse) and Butik (boutique) will open at 2:00 pm. Stop at the Kaffestuga to buy coffee, Lucia buns and cookies. Shop for gifts at the Swedish Butik. The narrated performance with traditional Swedish Christmas songs, dancing, Swedish elves, and Jul Tomte (Santa) begins at 3 pm. The program highlight is the candlelight procession of Lucia.
This Swedish tradition celebrating St. Lucia Day has been passed down for generations. On December 13th, one of the shortest days of the year, girls in Sweden dress up as Sankta Lucia, wearing a white gown and a crown of candles, to bring light and hope into the long nights of winter. Her arrival marks the beginning of the holiday season.
Admission will be $10.00 at the door or online. Children 6 to 12 $5.00 and children under 5 admitted free. For more information and tickets to the event visit: www.swedishcouncilstlouis.org Check out the photo album to see photos of past performances.
The Swedish Council of St. Louis has been celebrating its Swedish Christmas program with the St. Louis community for 47 years. The Council was established on December 13, 1976, to promote the knowledge, preservation and understanding of the Swedish heritage. In supporting its mission, SCSL conducts several cultural events throughout the year. In addition, occasional programs feature Swedish decorations, cooking, crafts, history, and genealogy.
