Alton Juneteenth Celebration Saturday June 14, 2025
he Alton Juneteenth Committee is proud to present this year’s annual Juneteenth Celebration, “Unity, Peace, Freedom” with all day festivities on Saturday the 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Killion Park in Alton, Illinois.
Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, considered the date when the last enslaved people in America were freed. Although news of President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation had been widespread, total nationwide emancipation was only achieved when Union troops entered Galveston, Texas, two and a half years later, after the Civil War ended. While its roots are in Texas, Juneteenth has become a federal holiday, symbolizing the end of slavery and a day to celebrate the beginning of freedom all over the United States.
This year’s Juneteenth Celebration will be held at Killion Park in Alton, Illinois. The Celebration will start at 10:00 a.m. with opening ceremony at 11:30 a.m. with the Mayor Goins giving the proclamation, performances by local talent, spellbinding storytelling and Carmen in the MelodyLine soulful band will animate the day. Food vendors, merchants, and local non-profits informational booths will be on site. Children’s activities will be offered all day, including horseback riding, face painting, portable rock climbing wall and bounce houses.
This year we dedicate ourselves to working together in unity and peace for the continued march towards freedom.
