Local Author Meet & Greet, Maybe It's Your Medications
This event is of interest to older adults who take medications, family caregivers, and anyone who wants to minimize the number of medications they take. Join us for an interactive discussion about medication overload, America's "other drug problem." It is a problem marked not only by excessive use of medications, but by errors in how they are prescribed, monitored, and taken. Forty-two percent of adults age sixty-five and older take five or more medications daily. These individuals and family caregivers know the frustrations of lengthy medication lists, high drug costs, and frequent questions about the need and value of those medications. All too often, an unrecognized adverse drug effect is mistaken for a new medical condition, or worse, a symptom of getting older. But who stops to question the medications?
Hedva Barenholtz Levy, PharmD, is a pharmacist who specializes in geriatrics and now also a local author. Join us as she leads an interactive discussion about key medication considerations. Dr. Levy will highlight strategies for safer medication use from her new book, “Maybe It’s Your Medications: How to Avoid Unnecessary Drug Therapy and Adverse Drug Reactions.” Dr. Levy is founder of HbL PharmaConsulting, a senior care pharmacy practice in St. Louis, MO and adjunct faculty at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She has over 25 years’ experience educating older adults, caregivers, students, and caregiving professionals about safe and effective medication use.
