Based on the classic novella by Nikolai Gogol, VIY is a visually sumptuous, exceptionally eerie, gothic horror fantasy film like none other! Often regarded as the first true horror film ever produced in the Soviet Union, Konstantin Yershov and Georgiy Kropachyov’s phantasmagorical masterpiece tells the story of a seminary student who must spend three nights with the corpse of a beautiful young witch. But when she rises from the dead to seduce him, it will summon a nightmare of fear, desire and the ultimate demonic mayhem. Bursting with startling imagery and stunning practical effects (including a host of demons and the unforgettable titular monster), this “overlooked classic” (Paste) has influenced generations of directors for more than half a century and is still unlike any horror movie you’ve ever seen. Rarely screened and underseen, this is a creepy cinematic marvel that demands to be seen on the big screen.
Starting at 2 pm, we’ll be showing some horror-themed shorts from the Soviet Union, so come out early for an afternoon of terror.
This film is playing as part of Arkadin’s spotlight on Folk Horror From Around the World. Each Sunday features a creepy folktale-inspired horror film from a different country!
