The OG goth lesbian vampire extravaganza, THE HUNGER translated the hyper-stylized punch of MTV and the brooding sexuality of the emerging goth subculture into a dark and bloody horror bathed in moody shadows and simmering with sex and lust. Decades later, it remains a cult queer horror gem, oozing style, and delivering everything you want from a dark vampire flick. The story follows Catherine Deneuve’s ancient vampire hostess, whose latest ‘husband’, played to perfection by David Bowie, finds that he’s suddenly aging at a startling rate. Turning to Susan Sarandon’s scientist for help, it soon becomes evident that the mistress isn’t looking for a cure, but for a new muse.
Right from the electric opening sequence featuring Bauhaus at the peak of their powers performing “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” THE HUNGER sets the stage for a perfectly framed, exquisitely shot feature that trades in dense shadows and striking mood lighting, and delivers sharply edited jump-cuts and flash images to striking effect. A mainstay of lesbian bars for years to come thanks in no small part to a sensuous kiss shared by Deneuve and Sarandon, Tony Scott’s seductive horror romance influenced the goth-vampire antics of Near Dark and The Lost Boys (which plays later this evening!) and remains an impossibly chic riff on vampire lore.
The Hunger is just one part of a full night of goth A pre-show featuring concert clips and music videos from the world’s greatest goth rock band, Bauhaus, will precede the film at 4 pm. A Goth Rock Un-Happy Hour, with drink specials and music videos, will commence after the film and runs until The Lost Boys starts at 8:30 pm!
This film is part of Arkadin’s October-long SPOOKY SEASON series, highlighting ghosts, goblins, ghouls and more horrific entertainment in the lead-up to All Hallows’ Eve!
