Pushing the boundaries of cinematic logic, Leos Carax’s surrealist comedy-musical-Lynchian psychodrama extravaganza is a hallucinatory epic in which the chameleonic Denis Levant stars as Mr. Oscar, a shadowy character who effortlessly changes form over the span of a single day. Chauffeured around Paris by the mysterious Celine (Edith Scob), Mr. Oscar is, at various times, a captain of industry, a gibberish-spewing troglodyte who snatches models and takes them to his underground lair, a shadowy assassin sent to kill his own doppelganger, a loving father, and a dying old man. Monster movie, film noir, romantic drama, musical, crime thriller, futuristic sex fantasia… HOLY MOTORS is all of these and none. It is a ravishing, shape-shifting, fever dream of becoming, unraveling and starting all over again. From celluloid magic to the digital data stream, Mr. Oscar’s epic journey of the soul is all of our dreams.
“Such a wild, weird and joyful film that I wouldn’t have been surprised if fireworks started going off in the theater 3/4 of the way into the film. It’s that kind of experience.” -ScreenAnarchy
“This is a gorgeous furry teacup of a film, preposterous and filled with secrets; it is itself one big secret. Holy Motors is simultaneously immersive and alienating. The audience is forever being encouraged to forget about narrative sense and slip into a warm bath of unreason, but persistently jolted back out of it with non-sequiturs, accordion interludes, gags and unexpected chimps.” -The Guardian
“An ingenious, half-mad triumph!” -Film Comment
This film is screening as part of Arkadin’s September-long series ENVELOPE PUSHERS, spotlighting extreme cinema, convention-flouting surrealism and radical comedies that push the boundaries of content, narrative and sometimes good taste.
