On April 12 & 13, 2025, the Black is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations will convene its 9th Electoral Campaign School to advance its “National Black Political Agenda for Self-Determination” through local, state and national elections.
The Convention’s theme “The Ballot and the Bullet: Not One Day! Not One Dime! No Compromise! No Surrender!” references Malcolm X’s seminal 1964 speech, celebrates the free speech victory in the 2024 trial of the Uhuru 3 and declares the Coalition’s intent to continue the fight for its Black Power agenda despite attempts at repression and censorship by both major U.S. political parties.
The annual School teaches ordinary African people – workers, activists, women and youth – how to run for office. This year, it will feature presentations by:
Chairman Omali Yeshitela of the African People’s Socialist Party and Uhuru Movement
Belinda Parker-Brown, President/CEO of Louisiana United International
Charles Barron, former New York State Assemblyman and New York City Councilman
Kamm Howard of Reparations United
Zaki Baruti, President General of the Universal African People’s Organization
Lisa Davis, Black is Back Coalition Vice Chair
Jesse Todd, former Alderman, St. Louis, MO
Dr. Matsemela Odom, President, International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement
Efia Nwangaza, SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) veteran leader
In 2017, the Coalition developed a “National Black Political Agenda for Self-Determination,” which formed the campaign platform for several candidates across the U.S. The platform, which is a prerequisite for endorsement by the Coalition, includes: 1) the elevation of Black Women to full equal partnership in our struggle; 2) Black Community Control of the Police; 3) the immediate release of All Political Prisoners; 4) a Demand for Reparations; 5) Full Employment and a National Minimum Wage; and 6) an immediate Halt to Gentrification through the empowerment, stabilization and restoration of traditional Black neighborhoods.
“Our coalition has always recognized that voting as a means of attaining power was never intended to benefit African people in the U.S. or elsewhere. We have always recognized that it was only the blood-drenched struggle waged by our people, along with U.S. competition with the Soviet Union at the time that forced universal suffrage onto the political agenda with the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 following the enactment of the Civil Rights Bill in 1964.” says Coalition Chair Yeshitela.
“Most of the struggles being waged or promoted against the colonial regime of Donald John Trump are struggles to repair and advance the ill-defined agenda of the historically cowardly and unreliable Democratic Party. We are our own liberators and our electoral campaign school plays a powerful role in our liberation struggle. We must continue to use the training from this school as a means of implementing our own National Black Political Agenda for Self-determination”.
The School is free and open to the public. Registration and information at www.blackisbackcoalition.org
