A Chat with The Book House, Inc.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

The Book House in St. Louis was founded in 1986 and is  the largest and oldest Independent bookstore in the St. Louis area.   We relocated three years ago to our new location in historic downtown Maplewood with two floors wall to wall   new, old, rare and unusual  books and print items      We are an "old-school" bookstore  with  stacks of books in all subjects, winding aisles, chairs to sit and read,  and nooks and crannies of treasures  -  a place to get lost in.     But we are not outdated or old fashioned by any means!  We are an up to date community hub  for  new writers,  artists, and musicians  who frequently visit  read and perform in our community space.   We carry many new and small press titles and ship all over the world and love championing our local authors with regular read-out events and open mic nights.    We are a general bookstore and carry books on almost any subject and we specialize in art, literature, music, and all types of  children’s books (both classic and frontlist)  for all ages.  We also have  especially large collections of history,  cookbooks,  philosophy, African American,  science fiction, literary fiction, and graphic novels   Including our storage and backlist we have over 300,000 books in stock and we can order just about anything.   We love a good scavenger hunt !    Rumors of the demise of books and paper media have been greatly exaggerated  as we revel and enjoy sharing and introducing the love of books to new audiences every day.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

As mentioned,  the business was started in 1986  and  has evolved over time as we have grown and changed with the times.   We hope to be in business another 30 years (at least)  and become the "bookstore of the 21stcentury"   while also archiving and preserving  artifacts of past generations.   We are a sort of combination of a museum, school,  art gallery,  library,  concert hall, theater space, time machine, and theme park.   If you like Harry Potter, Charles Dicken’s  Curiosity Shop, Narnia, 84 charing Cross,  Bob Dylan,  Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, or  Shakespeare and Co,  you will love a visit to our store.   Come deplug for a while and  travel into your imagination . . .   and see the joy of actually visiting a  REAL  bookstore,  rather than a computer screen!

What do you love most about your job?

We love the people we meet,  the books,  the stories,  the atmosphere.  A place where ideas and conversation flow freely.   And sometimes sort of an island of  forgotten toys . . .     Something magical.  Hard to describe.

What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?

We get the "reaction"  almost every day.   First when someone walks in  and get that  "wow"  moment  and say they want to just move in here  or  this is "heaven"   then they find a book they remember as a child,  or a book they never thought they would find,  or  something just simply wonderful.    And then they share it with  a friend and come back again and again . . .
