The name given for batik by the Yoruba tribe is adire alabela, which means wax resist. Wax can be applied to fabric using wood stamps, stencils, or foam rubber. In Yoruba tradition, foam rubber applied free hand is the primary method. Gasali weaves generous guidance and stories of his culture and life throughout class time, creating a rich and immersive learning opportunity. Students are supported in their explorations as they develop new knowledge and beautiful yardage, scarves, bags, and shirts. No experience necessary; all levels are welcome.
*August 11 is the arrival day for this session. Workshop instruction starts on August 12 and ends August 16.
