Attendees can expect to see a wide variety of items, ranging from political campaign buttons and ribbons for such popular former presidents as Abraham Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, to buttons featuring sports teams and stars, TV personalities, civil rights icons, military heroes, advertising and comic characters, fantasy candidates and more.
The gathering will be hosted by the local chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC), a national non-profit hobbyist association dedicated to preserving political history.
“Our meetings offer a great opportunity for young and old alike to see and learn about real artifacts used by political candidates, protesters through the ages, sports teams, advertising agencies and more,” says Tony Lee, a Titusville resident and president of APIC’s “Big Apple” Chapter. “Most of these items were created for a short-term use, like an election or a march, and weren’t designed to survive beyond that event. But many did, and perhaps because of their ephemeral nature, they became prized collectibles.”
Admission to the event will be $3 for each adult. Any child 12 years or younger will enter for free. To encourage a lifelong love of collecting, each child will receive assorted pinback buttons, free of charge, to start his or her own collection.
Free appraisals will be offered for items brought in by members of the general public; the public also may bring items for auction, with a commission rate of 10 percent of the overall sale for appropriate items. For more information, please contact Tony Lee at 609/310-0817 or [email protected].
