Dead Sea Scrolls Lecture: The Archaeology of Qumran & the Dead Sea Scrolls

The Dead Sea Scrolls represent a collection of Jewish religious works, including early copies of the Hebrew Bible, which were discovered in caves surrounding the site of Qumran, by the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. The scrolls were deposited in the caves by members of a Jewish sect that inhabited Qumran in the first century B.C.E. and first century C.E. In this slide-illustrated lecture, we examine the archaeological remains of the Qumran settlement, and discuss the connection of the site with the scrolls and the sect's identity.
Speaker: Dr. Jodi Magness, Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
