The controversial 2005 Kitzmiller vs. Dover Area School District trial involving attempts to put intelligent design in public schoolbooks has been called the most significant trial defending science teaching since the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. Judge Jones, a Lutheran Republican, was nominated by former Senator Rick Santorum, a creationist activist, and appointed by George W. Bush. His ruling was that intelligent design is a religious theory, not scientific, and banned from public classrooms.
