The performance will feature Mozart's Vesperae solennes de confessore K.339 (Solemn Vespers) for chorus, soloists, and orchestra, and Schubert's Mass No. 5 in A-flat, D.678. The Philadelphia Singers have a long history of performing the Solemn Vespers; the work was included in the program of the very first concert ever given by TPS in May 1972, and has been both an ensemble and audience favorite ever since. In contrast with the musical legacy of the Solemn Vespers, the Schubert A-flat Mass is being performed by TPS for the first time. This piece is less well-known than Schubert's mass setting in E-flat, but represents an equally beautiful setting, and is considered by some to be the high-water mark of Viennese classicism as developed by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven.
A pre-concert lecture panel, led by Assistant Conductor Brian Schkeeper, will take place at the Cathedral Basilica at 2pm. This pre-concert lecture will be open and free to the public.
