I have often been asked about my culinary background, to which I jokingly respond that I come from a culture that has been focused on food for the past five thousand years. I am not a professionally trained chef, but that’s one heck of a resume.
ABOUT ME:
My background is a melting pot of cultures, cuisines and countries. African by birthright, Indian by family, and American by citizenship is my Curriculum Vitae. I have lived in 3 countries rich in history, diverse in demographics, and abundant in ingredients - because of this I have always had access to knowledgeable aunties, tools at hand and an abundance of ingredients, which I incorporate into my sweet and savory recipes. Love for cooking and baking started at the age of 13 with my grandmother’s visits, my skills were immediately enhanced by my foodie mother and techniques continued to bloom by my personal interest and investment. After a successful and lucrative sales career in banking, I revisited my childhood and got reintroduced to my love of food making while raising my own young family. I have worked in the food service industry since then in various capacities; as a dishwasher, server, professional cook, baker, caterer, food writer, food entrepreneur, pastry chef, culinary instructor, culinary manager and currently as the director of my own virtual cooking school, Foodie with Neelma. The flavors, diversity and experiences brought into my life, enabled me to teach the cuisines of the world today.
