In recognition of October’s National Filipino American History Month, join us IN-PERSON to learn how to research and share your invaluable family history and memories. Presenters include Dr. Diane Rodill, Jackie Jamero Berganio and Kassie Procopio. Moderated by Cynthia Mejia-Giudici.
Dr. Diane Rodill’s work has appeared in Rappler, Peace Corps Worldwide and numerous publications and museums. A former Philly girl, Diane earned a PhD from Temple University and worked in international public health until her retirement, when she shifted her attention to gathering family histories. Her book on her father (1894-1977), A Filipino Rascal, is pending.
Jackie Jamero Berganio is a third-generation Filipino American, a member of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Greater Seattle Chapter, and Project Coordinator of the FANHS video documentary "Filipino Americans: Discovering Their Past For The Future." She believes in knowing our history and telling our stories.
Kassie Procopio, born and raised in Montana, attended Kansas State University (B.S in Archaeology with a minor in classical studies) and the UW Museology Masters program and currently works at the White River Valley Museum. Their professional goals are to learn how to help heal generational traumas created by hate, distrust and pain. They hope to lead their life with the humor of their father, the light of their mother, the grace of their teachers and the determination for better from their ancestors.
Cynthia Mejia-Giudici (moderator) is the daughter of immigrants from Pangasinan, Philippines. An educator, oral historian and writer, she earned a BA in East Asian Studies (1975, Fairhaven College of Western WU) and an MA in the Education of the Deaf (1982, Gallaudet University). She wrote a chapter “Part of the Community-Deaf Filipino Americans in Seattle,” in Filipinos: Transformation and Identity, Sage publications, 2001.
Don’t forget to bring something to take notes on as this workshop is chock full of great suggestions and ideas!
