Black Jaw is a monthly reading series hosted by students in the UW MFA, named for the inner gums and mouth of the Chinook salmon, which is native to the rivers of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. This event was created out of the desire to have more reading opportunities for MFA students, but also to bring together a more cohesive community of graduate and undergraduate creative writers at UW and beyond. Typically, each reading features 4-5 graduate readers (balance of poetry and prose) and at least one undergraduate reader. Black Jaw is a space to build community and to also practice reading and entertaining our rough and raw works. It's casual, fun, and usually involves a beer or two afterward. There's also an open mic segment!
