UW Psychology Distinguished Alumni, Featuring Dr. Cynthia Berg

UW Psychology Distinguished Alumni Lecture, Featuring Dr. Cynthia Berg A Self- and Social-Regulation Perspective on Type 1 Diabetes Management Across the Life Span Type 1 diabetes is a difficult illness to manage and requires daily self-regulation (e.g., planning to meet diabetes goals, self-efficacy, and managing emotions) as well as social regulation (disclosing to others to obtain needed assistance). Although aspects of parent involvement in diabetes management decline across adolescence and into young adulthood, our longitudinal studies show that having family members and romantic partners who are knowledgeable about one’s diabetes behaviors and are available to help when needed is associated with better diabetes outcomes. Social regulation can also facilitate more effective use of technologies such as continuous glucose monitors by sharing GM data with others. These studies have served as the foundation for randomized clinical trials that hold promise for optimizing self- and social-regulation on a daily basis for individuals across the life span.
