Maya Jewell Zeller with Gabrielle Bates and Laura Read

"In out takes/ glove box the speaker thinks beautifully through the shifting sands of mothering and tracks the body as it spirals through time. The language is dazzling. We’re privy to a ‘vermillion funeral’ and learn an astonishing thing, ‘[t]he square root of whiskey is water.’ Intimacy, here, includes the natural world. Animals and plants are tended to, torn into, and observed with an enviable capacity to render them mythic, tangible. These poems are spellbinding—read them out loud to experience their full power.”—Eduardo Corral Maya Jewell Zeller serves as Associate Professor for Central Washington University, USA, and Affiliate Faculty in the low-residency MFA for Western Colorado University, USA. She is the author of out takes/ glove box (2023), the interdisciplinary collaboration Alchemy for Cells & Other Beasts (2017), Rust Fish (2011), and the chapbook Yesterday, the Bees (2015). Gabrielle Bates’s poetry has appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, American Poetry Review, and other publications. A writer, visual artist, and cohost of The Poet Salon podcast, Bates is originally from Birmingham, Alabama, and now lives in Seattle, Washington. Her collection Judas Goat (Tin House, 2023) is available now. Laura Read is the author of But She Is Also Jane, Dresses from the Old Country, Instructions for My Mother’s Funeral, and The Chewbacca on Hollywood Boulevard Reminds Me of You. She teaches at Spokane Falls Community College and Eastern Washington University.
