Alison Pouliot visits the store to discuss Meetings with Remarkable Mushrooms, which delves deep into forests across the globe to understand how fungi underpin terrestrial ecosystems and have humans utterly enamored.
Fungi comprise one of the most vital kingdoms in the natural world. Meetings with Remarkable Mushrooms is a trans-global journey with ecologist and photographer Alison Pouliot to discover not just fungi, but how humans are deeply intertwined with these enigmatic organisms, and how they underpin terrestrial ecosystems. From Australia’s deserts to Iceland’s glaciers to America’s Cascade Mountains diverse fungi are revealed through the perspectives and stories of various fungus-followers that Pouliot meets along the way – foragers and farmers, mycologists and other scientists, First Nations peoples, artists and philosophers and those working to conserve fungi. Melding science and personal reflection, Pouliot shines a light on these whimsically strange organisms as she explores the fungi that appear after fire; the impact of climate change on fungi; the role of women in the history of mycology; First Nations knowledge of fungi; the intersections of fungal conservation and aesthetics; and the integral role they play in our ecosystems, among other fungal themes.
Dr. Alison Pouliot is an ecologist, author and professional environmental photographer with a focus on fungi. Her work spans both northern and southern hemispheres ensuring two autumns and a double dose of fungi each year. Alison is actively involved in teaching, research and conservation, and has conducted over 800 fungus forays and workshops in a dozen countries. Alison is author of The Allure of Fungi, Wild Mushrooming, and Meeting with Remarkable Mushrooms. www.alisonpouliot.com
