Record producer James William Guercio’s first and last film is a visually extravagant, behaviorally loopy story of an Arizona motorcycle cop named "Big" John Wintergreen (played by short Robert Blake) who desperately aspires to prove himself and become a hot-shot detective. When he gets his wish and is promoted to the homicide unit following the mysterious murder of a hermit, Wintergreen is forced to confront his illusions about himself, the force and the whole mess of the world.
ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE is full of artful sorrow and a nagging nostalgia for the mythic and straightforward moral code of the West. And Wintergreen sure is an American, cracking raw eggs into a glass while lifting weights in front of an American flag and a painting of Daniel Boone. The 60s loom large like a wound on the body politic.
Longer on mood and sun-soaked atmosphere than narrative complication, the film revels in the antics of its twitchy, hyped-up cast, a motley crew of character actors which includes Billy Green Bush as Blake’s partner and an amazing Elisha Cook Jr. Stunningly shot by the legendary Conrad Hall, ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE features a bravura final shot you're never going to forget, a capper to the film’s EASY RIDER-in-reverse trajectory. This '70s Hollywood at its best — delivering a blunt blow toward an entire nation profoundly divided.
