And that's what the savvy organizers behind Seattle's headiest festival, Freakout, have been doing since 2013. Founders Guy Keltner and Skyler Locatelli—as well as their highly motivated staff—have manifested their dream to psychedelicize the festival experience through bold curation and relentless drive. Every year's a dazzling adventure in which people discover new favorite bands, get wowed by venerable legends for the first time, meet dozens of like-minded music fanatics, and generate memories that will sustain them for a lifetime. Held annually in November, when autumn's cold and the dark begin their clammy grip on folks' spirit, Freakout arrives like a beautiful hallucination, elevating moods and expanding minds with heroic doses of audio-visual excellence. Amid the gorgeously disorienting globules of vivid colors created by the Mad Alchemy crew, over 100 bands and solo artists bring their A+ games to small and mid-size venues in the music-loving Ballard neighborhood. Whether they be gray-haired immortals (Os Mutantes, The Seeds), seasoned luminaries (No Age, Black Bananas), or lesser-known upstarts on the rise (Automatic, Sgt. Papers), Freakout's acts pour on the energy and charisma to trigger synaptic fireworks. Honoring the past, celebrating the present, and fostering the future, Freakout delivers more excitement per square foot than any other Seattle-area music festival. With crucial music-biz connections in all of the Americas and in Europe, Freakout's operatives book a heady array of musicians that may initially be unknown to you, but once you're exposed to them, fandom ensues. Over the last 11 years, Keltner and Locatelli have built solid trust in their aesthetics, raising Freakout to the level of other revered psych-oriented fests such as Levitation and Desert Daze. As a supplement to the fall blowout, Freakout also hosts the Weekender in March; it's a smaller but no less thrilling iteration of the main event that proves this collective has a surplus of great ideas. Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization bolstered by a board of directors, Freakout strives to foster an even more inclusive booking policy and to make even bolder infrastructural decisions. Under this new regime, music-lovers can still bank on fantastic, diverse bills while Freakout's team doesn't have to stress over bank statements.
