35th Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence Celebration

On Saturday, August 29, the Ukrainian Association of Washington State (UAWS) marks 35 years of Ukrainian independence with a free, daylong celebration at Seattle Center's Mural Amphitheatre, running noon to 10 p.m. Organizers expect 10,000 to 15,000 attendees, making it one of the community's largest gatherings to date. The day brings a full lineup of live performances, including vocalist Michael Novokhatskyi, alyona alyona, Inna Kovtun, Olivan, and the Barvinok Ensemble, alongside authentic Ukrainian food, an artisan and makers' marketplace, and activities for kids throughout the afternoon and evening. A short walk away at Theatre Puget Sound, the Armory (305 Harrison St.), visitors can try hands-on cultural workshops throughout the day: Petrykivka painting, Koza Motanka doll-making, Ukrainian poppies acrylic painting, and Straw Pavuk weaving. Workshops run on staggered schedules, so visitors are welcome to take part in more than one. UAWS, serving Washington State's Ukrainian community since 1971, organizes the celebration entirely through volunteer effort and community support, with no paid advertising behind it. The event is open to everyone, with no cost, ticket, or registration required to attend any part of the day. More at uaws.org/ukrainian-independence-2026/.
